The Hilfsgemeinschaft (Austrian Association in Support of the Blind and Visually Impaired) has existed since 1935 as a secular, non-profit association without affiliations to a political party or group. Our goal is to improve the living conditions of visually impaired and blind people. At present we provide support and guidance for about 4,200 members from all over Austria.
The main focus of our work is to eliminate existing barriers. We are presently working to improve barrier-free communication, barrier-free architecture and barrier-free tourism. For many years the Hilfsgemeinschaft has been active in the field of eye disease prevention.
Furthermore, we draw attention to the situation of visually impaired and blind people in Austria through public information campaigns and promote awareness of human acceptance and tolerance. The Hilfsgemeinschaft is a member of numerous working groups and cooperates closely in many projects with organizations, companies, colleges and universities from different sectors. By doing so we advocate the interests of our visually impaired and blind members in a highly effective way.
The Hilfsgemeinschaft has launched ‘we see different’, a public information campaign which adopts a humorous approach to dealing with the stereotype of the pitiable blind beggar. Part of the campaign consists of a free brochure with comic strips and amusing ideas for sighted and blind people to come together in a relaxed, less inhibited atmosphere. Sighted adults and children learn to abandon their shyness and, if necessary, to offer the right support.
